GROTON, Conn. - Above, Naval Submarine Base New London Commanding Officer, Capt. Mark S. Ginda shares the story, "Pigs Will Be Pigs," to children ages 3 to 5, at the base's Child Development Center last Thursday.

The story explained the different denominations of both bills and coins and how they are used, and the reading opportunity was one of many activities taking place during Military Saves Week.
Dedicated to helping military members and families gain wealth not debt, Military Saves Week took place from Feb. 22 through March 1.
The week is an extension of the greater America Saves national campaign; both are conducted by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA). The week opens the opportunity to encourage, motivate and educate Service members and their families to increase personal savings, payoff debts, and develop habits to form a more secure financial future.
SUBASE's Fleet and Family Support Center sponsored many base-wide contests and classes in support of the week. Classes such as 'Credit Card Plastic Surgery,' and 'How to Stretch Your Dollar,' provided creative insights on how to cut down on credit card debt and get the most out of your money, while other presentations highlighted military saving programs, such as the Thrift Savings Plan.
Classes held contests to see who could save the most money or reduce the most debt. Prizes included free rental cars from Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Jewelry from Mallove's Jewelers.
A goal of Military Saves Week was to teach fiscal responsibility and opportunities to the young so that the positive financial actions become habits as adults.
"I hope youth and teens will become more aware of the value of money, the importance of saving and knowing the various options they have to save in their financial institutions," said Martha Hanley, who headed Military Saves Week for SUBASE's FFSC. "I hope that they work with their parents to develop financial goals to achieve concerning their future perspectives such as college, or other endeavors."
