News from Local Campaigns
Across the country, campaigns are continuing to spread the word about savings and financial responsibility in a variety of ways:
Silicon Valley/South Bay Saves
On February 26, Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors President Dave Cortese presented a commendation to Silicon Valley/South Bay Saves at a meeting in San Jose of La Raza Roundtable de California. More than 250 attended the event, including keynote speakers California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, and California Assembly Speaker Emeritus and University of California Board Regent John Pérez. SVSB Saves Coordinator Jennie Meehan accepted the recognition, Cortese read a letter from America Saves Director Nancy Register, and all were encouraged to take the pledge to save.
For America Saves Week, Virginia Saves held three webinars presented by certified financial planners and recordings are available online:
- Building Blocks of Retirement Security covers Social Security planning, different retirement savings vehicles and tax advantages, and retirement distribution planning
- Jumpstart Your Financial Plans with Your Tax Refund provides five key strategies for using your tax refund to its maximum benefit
- Taking Control: A Financial Planning Starter Kit teaches about budgeting, spending plans, setting goals, managing debt and more
Young Illinois Saves
For America Saves Week, Young Illinois Saves organized the Young Chicago Saves conference, attended by more than 100 high school students from Chicago Public Schools serving a high percentage of low- and moderate-income youth. Held on February 24 at the Chicago Public Library Harold Washington Library Center, the event included breakout sessions on career development (resumes and mock interviews), college financing with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission and the Economic Awareness Council's College Budget Builder, and bank meetings with FDIC and Chicago's Bank On banks including TCF Bank and Guaranty Bank. Students heard from three of their peers about what they have accomplished this year with saving and financial education as well as panels including representatives from the FDIC, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, State Treasurer's Office, City Treasurer's Office, and youth entrepreneurs. State Farm Insurance Companies sponsored the event.
