America is becoming more urban. Already, over 60 percent of Americans call a city home. Some are calling living in a city the “new American dream,” as millennials and empty nesters opt for apartments instead of homes, nearby dining and dancing instead of a yard - and bike lanes instead of two-car garages. And that’s a good thing, because city living can be expensive, and ditching the car can mean major savings. Actually, biking, walking, and taking public transportation can pay off in more ways than one.
Google maps shows that it should take about 30 minutes to walk two miles. If you’re fortunate enough to be that close to work, walking is a great option. Walking improves your health, trims your waistline, and can even improve your mood. It’s something everyone knows how to do and it’s free! It can also help you take less sick days and may even save you money on medicines by preventing illness.
Another great option is to bike where you need to go. Don’t know how to ride? It’s never too late to learn. If you already own a bike, there is no cost apart from some simple maintenance. Don’t ride enough to own a bike? See if you can buy a bike to share with a neighbor or friend. But even biking is becoming more accessible for those who don’t own one. Cities and Universities across the country are launching Bike Share programs. With the program, you can pick up a bike at one location and drop it off at another. Biking can be a cheaper, greener, and certainly a healthier option than driving a car.
