#MSW2015 Financial Institution Awards Winners Announced

Congratulations to the recipients of the Military Saves Week (MSW) 2015 Financial Institution Awards! These banks and credit unions went above and beyond to encourage servicemembers and their families to reduce debt and build wealth.

Military Saves Best Military Bank Awards

Military Saves selected two winners for the Best Military Bank award for outstanding participation in Military Saves Week 2015. Armed Forces Bank, N.A., Fort Leavenworth, KS and Fort Hood National Bank, Fort Hood, TX were recognized for their efforts to help servicemembers save during Military Saves Week. The awards will be presented at the Association of Military Banks of America’s annual conference, August 30 - September 2, 2015, in Leesburg, VA. 

Military Saves Best Credit Union Awards

Military Saves selected two winners for the Best Credit Union award for outstanding participation in Military Saves Week 2015. Navy Federal Credit Union, Naval Submarine Base New London, CT and Pacific Marine Credit Union Twenty Nine Palms, CA were recognized for their efforts to help servicemembers save during Military Saves Week. The awards will be presented at the Defense Credit Union Council’s annual conference, August 16-19, 2015, in Las Vegas, NV.

The Gift of Homeownership

Quaneka Willis, a single mother of three children, was receiving rental assistance through the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee when she decided to take control of her finances. So, in September of 2013 she attended the Make Your Money Talk program and pledged as a Wisconsin Saver. In less than 12 months, she had maximized her savings and was beginning the process of purchasing her first home.

Until last summer, Michael Lindman spent money freely. “I was a union truck driver for 35 years and had a good income,” said Lindman. “I owned my own home, saved a little, and tried to live within my own budget. You always think there’s going to be that much coming in, but things can change in a split second.”

Challenging Herself to Save

It all started when Marchale Burton overheard Alabama cooperative extension colleague Isaac Chappelle, coordinator of Alabama Saves, explaining how saving just a little bit – even change – is all it takes to become a saver. “I thought about that,” Burton said, “and wanted to see if it would work.” So, she challenged herself to see how much change she could save.
