Don’t Miss a Payment: What to Know About Direct Express® and Safer Ways to Receive Your Federal Benefits
Big changes are coming to how you receive your federal payments, and now is the time to get prepared.

Big changes are coming to how you receive your federal payments, and now is the time to get prepared.
Starting September 30, 2025, the federal government will phase out paper checks for payments like tax refunds, Social Security, Veterans’ benefits, and more. From that date forward, all federal payments will be issued electronically only.
For many people, this change will streamline how they receive their money, but if you currently receive paper checks and don’t have a bank or credit union account, this transition could cause a delay or disruption in your payments.
What Are Your Options?
You have two safe and secure ways to receive your federal payments electronically:
1. Open a Checking or Savings Account with Direct Deposit
This is the recommended option for long-term financial health and flexibility.
With a traditional checking or savings account, you can:
- Receive payments faster and more reliably
- Easily manage and track your money
- Build a relationship with a financial institution
- Access tools and resources to support your financial goals
Most banks and credit unions offer no- or low-fee account options. You can visit Bank On to find safe and affordable accounts near you.
2. Enroll in a Direct Express® Debit Card
If opening a bank account isn’t possible for you right now, the Direct Express® card is an alternative to receive your federal benefits securely.
Here’s what you need to know about Direct Express®:
- It’s a prepaid debit card specifically for federal benefit payments
- Funds are automatically loaded onto your card each month
- No bank account or credit check is needed to enroll
- You can use the card to make purchases and withdraw cash
- It’s safer than carrying cash and eliminates the risk of lost or stolen checks

Take Action Now
Whether you choose to open a traditional account or enroll in Direct Express®, the most important thing is to act before the September 30, 2025 deadline.
Don’t wait until the last minute—getting set up now ensures you won’t miss a payment and puts you on the path to greater financial confidence and stability.
