How to Host a No-Spend Weekend (and Actually Enjoy It)
When money is tight, weekends can be the biggest budget busters — dining out, shopping trips, and impulse buys add up fast. One creative way our Savers cut back without feeling deprived is by planning a No-Spend Weekend.
Think of it as a mini staycation for your wallet — a chance to hit pause on spending and focus on fun, free activities instead. Plus, it’s a great way to reset your habits and find joy in the simple things.
Here’s how to plan a No-Spend Weekend you’ll actually enjoy — and maybe even want to repeat!
Set Your Rules
First, decide what “no-spend” means for you. Some Savers stick to absolute zero spending, while others allow essentials like gas for commuting or fresh produce if needed.
Tip: Plan ahead by meal prepping and filling up the gas tank before Friday night — this reduces temptation to spend mid-weekend.
Make a Free Fun List
A no-spend weekend doesn’t mean sitting at home bored. Brainstorm free activities you actually want to do. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Go for a hike or nature walk
- Organize a family game or movie night with what you already have
- Visit a local park or splash pad
- Declutter and donate items you no longer need
- Host a potluck using only pantry staples with family or neighbors
- Start a DIY home project with leftover supplies
- Have a “vacation at home” day: sleep in, cook a special breakfast, and relax
Get Everyone On Board
If you live with family or roommates, explain the plan ahead of time so everyone’s expectations match. Make it fun — turn it into a challenge: Can we go two full days without spending a penny?
Prep Your Meals
Food is one of the easiest ways to accidentally blow a no-spend streak. Before the weekend starts, take inventory of what’s in your pantry, fridge, and freezer. Plan your meals and snacks using what you already have — and make it a fun game to use up ingredients creatively.
Track What You Would Have Spent
As the weekend unfolds, jot down what you didn’t spend — maybe it’s a $12 takeout order, $5 coffee, or $40 in entertainment. On Monday, total it up and consider transferring that amount to your savings account or using it to pay down debt. Seeing the real impact of your choices is super motivating!
Reflect and Celebrate
At the end of your No-Spend Weekend, take a few minutes to reflect. What did you enjoy? What was hard? What surprised you? Did you learn anything about your spending habits?
Celebrate your savings win — and consider pledging to do it once a month to give your budget a regular boost.
Join the No-Spend Weekend Summer Challenge!
From July 18–August 10, America Saves is hosting the No-Spend Weekend Summer Challenge — and you’re invited!
Each weekend has its own theme, like Backyard Adventures or Unplug & Recharge. Take on the challenge, skip the spending, and show us how you made the most of your weekend!
Share what you did, how you saved, and any creative ideas or lessons learned. When you do, you'll be entered to win a fun prize – like a gift card or swag basket as a thank-you for inspiring fellow Savers.
Saving money doesn’t have to feel like a sacrifice. Sometimes, it just takes a little creativity — and a free weekend to prove it.
