Get Ready for Back-to-School with these Savings Tips

Although it's still summer, now is the best time to get ready for back-to-school - before the rush hits. A little planning now can save you big when it’s time to fill backpacks and closets again.

Here are some budget-friendly tips to help your family tackle back-to-school shopping without overspending:

Take Inventory First

Before you buy anything, see what you already have — check closets, drawers, last year’s supplies, and even backpacks hiding in the garage. You’ll be surprised how many pencils, binders, and clothes can be reused.

Set a Spending Limit & Make a List

Set a spending limit for each child and stick to it. Write out exactly what you need — and resist those tempting extras in the store aisles.

Shop Your Home & Swap

Host a “school supply swap” with friends or neighbors. Trade gently used uniforms, backpacks, or surplus supplies — it’s a fun way to save money and reduce waste.

Spread Out Purchases

Start picking up essentials bit by bit — buy what’s truly needed now and wait for clearance sales for the rest. Many schools don’t require everything on day one!

Hunt for Coupons & Tax-Free Days

Check for back-to-school sales, store coupons, and price match offers. Many states offer tax-free shopping weekends on clothes and supplies — mark your calendar and plan bigger purchases then.

Consider Gently Used Tech

Need a laptop or calculator? Look for refurbished or gently used options online or through local community groups — a safe, cost-effective alternative to paying full price.

Save the Savings!

Each time you score a deal, transfer that amount into your savings account. Small amounts add up fast and can help with surprise expenses during the school year.

Get Ahead & Stress Less

Starting early means fewer last-minute splurges and less financial stress for your family.
