Debt Reduction Resource Center

Small Steps Today. More Financial Freedom Tomorrow.

Take Control of Your Debt, One Payment at a Time

Debt can feel overwhelming, but every payment you make is a step toward greater financial confidence. Whether you're paying off credit cards, student loans, medical bills, or other debt, creating a plan can help you reduce financial stress, free up money for savings, and move you closer to achieving your financial goals.

Paying down debt IS saving and an important part of your financial journey. Paying down debt can help reduce interest costs, create more money in your plan, and free up funds for your future goals. Every dollar you no longer pay in interest is another dollar you can put toward building a strong financial future.

Start your debt reduction journey by learning the why behind the plan. Read why paying down debt IS saving.

Ready to Get Started? The good news is that you don’t have to do everything at once. Small, consistent actions can make a BIG difference over time. Start with where you are today, follow the steps below, and build a path toward paying down debt and reaching your financial goals.

Step 1: Get a Clear View

Before creating a debt repayment plan, it’s imperative to know how much money is coming in, where it’s going, and how much you can put toward paying down debt and your other financial goals. Creating a Spending and Savings Plan is the perfect way to figure all of that out!

Having a plan matters! Research shows that savers with a plan are more than 2x as likely to achieve their financial goals than those without one. Get started here and create a personalized Spending and Savings Plan

Step 2:  Look for Ways to Save

Once you have a clear picture of your finances, look for opportunities to create more room in your monthly plan. Finding extra money doesn’t require big changes or cutting out everything you enjoy. Small adjustments to everyday expenses can add up over time and help you make progress toward paying down debt.

Step 3:  Organize Your Debt

Next, it’s important to understand exactly what you owe. Take a few minutes to gather information about each of your debts, including balances, interest rates, minimum payments, and due dates.

Having everything in one place can help you make informed decisions and create a repayment plan that works for your unique situation. Download our Debt Repayment Tracker to organize your debts and monitor your progress.

Step 4: Choose a Repayment Strategy

There’s no “one size fits all” approach to paying down debt. The best strategy is the one you can stick with consistently. Two common approaches include the Debt Snowball that focuses on paying down the smallest balance first while making minimum payments on all other debts and the Debt Avalanche that focuses on paying off debt with the highest interest rate first.

Step 5:  Keep Moving Forward

Paying down debt is an important step, but it’s only one part of your financial journey. As you make progress, continue building habits that support your goals and the things that matter most to you.

Progress looks different for everyone and should be celebrated along the way! Whether it’s making an extra payment, creating a new saving habit, or just sticking to your plan, it’s important to take a minute to recognize achieving milestones – no matter how big or small.

As your goals change and grow, continue learning and exploring resources that can help you make the best financial decisions. Remember – an informed saver, is an empowered saver!
